At least 32 killed and 85 injured after two trains collide in Greece

The first three carriages of the passenger train have reached temperatures of up to 1,500 degrees, according to local authorities

At least 32 people have been killed and 85 injured, 25 of them in serious condition, after two trains collided head-on near the Greek city of Tempe, in the center of the country. A commercial train and a passenger train collided around midnight, the Greek fire service and the ERT chain have collected.

According to preliminary reports, the passenger train – in which 350 people were on board and which made the route Thessaloniki (north) to Larisa (centre) – had diverted to the wrong track, where the commercial was circulating. The collision derailed three of the passenger convoy’s carriages.

“Carriage one and two don’t exist. Due to the severity of the collision, they were driven away,” Thessaly regional governor Kostas Agorastos told ERT, explaining that among the injured, there are those with burns and mutilations.

For his part, the mayor of Tempo, Giorgos Manoli, has assured that the first three carriages have developed temperatures of 1,200 to 1,500 degrees Celsius.

Forty ambulances rushed to the scene of the incident to treat the many injured, who were transferred to the University Hospital of the City of Larisa and the Hospital of the City of Katerinis. Currently, more than 50 people remain hospitalized.

Meanwhile, the head of Larisa’s train station, who was in charge at the time of the accident; the representative of the Hellenic Train company and another official have been taken to the Larisa police, according to the above-mentioned media.

In addition to the firefighters, the police and the military have mobilized to assist in the rescue duties, triggering an alert protocol as per the chain mentioned above in the event of such accidents.
