No right without marriage – Not married: This is how you inherit as a partner

Marriage is no longer a “must” if you love each other. You can be together without getting married. However: in Austrian inheritance law life partners do not yet have a corresponding function, with a few exceptions they are not even mentioned therein. Which can become problematic in case of death and inheritance. We know how to get your share of the inheritance, even if you don’t say yes.

If you want to leave something to your loved one after your death, you should ideally say ‘yes’ to marriage or a registered partnership. Without disclosing too much in advance, in most cases a will is required so that a partner has the option of inheriting anything at all.
