Marriage is no longer a “must” if you love each other. You can be together without getting married. However: in Austrian inheritance law life partners do not yet have a corresponding function, with a few exceptions they are not even mentioned therein. If you want to leave something to your loved one after your death, you should ideally say ‘yes’ to marriage or a registered partnership. Without disclosing too much in advance, in most cases a will is required so that a partner has the option of inheriting anything at all.
