A German star chef is currently shocking his guests with an energy surcharge of 1.50 euros per person. The “Krone” asked if something like this would also be possible in Austria.
As delicious as the menus at Henssler & Henssler are, a mother – she had eaten with four children at the restaurant on Hamburg’s Elbstraße – was upset by the bill. Because on the receipt she discovered the absurd item of an “energy lump sum” hidden between the food and drinks. And so she had to pay 7.50 euros extra for five people.
In the newspaper “Bild”, senior boss Werner Henssler (72) justifies the energy surcharge by saying that he has a cost increase of more than 100 percent: “I do not see at all that I am paying for it because of the failed energy policy of the Federal Green Government. ” And if you don’t like it, you don’t have to come.
“In Austria, such a surcharge would not be advisable”
“The starting point is that increased prices must be included in the calculation. Such an additional surcharge is more than unnecessary,” says Mario Pulker, chairman of the Austrian Chamber of Commerce for gastronomy. Pulker, himself a hotel and restaurant owner, assumes “that a separate energy surcharge would arouse displeasure among guests”. However, everyone is responsible for himself.
