Severe shortage of personnel – “care heroes” from the Far East for the domestic market

Date:

The Philippines, Vietnam and Co. are not only popular with holidaymakers, but are also expected to provide the necessary nursing staff in Austria in the future. The topic is explosive, even at the top.

By 2030, more than 70,000 nurses in Austria will be sought, but unlikely to be found. Because the blatant shortage of skilled workers would be hit hardest in healthcare. The responsible federal states are now using various strategies to find urgently needed reinforcements, currently also in the Far East.

future cooperation
That is precisely why a real milestone was set at the Chamber of Commerce on Friday with great pomp and a Philippine national anthem. The focus was on Evangelina Lourdes A. Bernas, the ambassador of the Philippines, Günther Wiesinger, president of the Association of Healthcare Companies (WKÖ) and Vienna city councilor Peter Hacker. The three protagonists signed a first letter of intent for the future cooperation and recruitment of nursing staff from the Asian island state for the metropolis of Vienna.

The exchange on ethical recruitment, improving the recognition of training and simplifying emigration requirements on the Far East side were also an important part of the meeting. After all, it still takes a very long time to get the Filipinos into the country. Chamber Secretary General Karlheinz Kopf was delighted: “The shortage of personnel is particularly great in the health sector. It is therefore essential to attract international specialists to the industry. The Philippines has a four-year bachelor’s degree program and a very good reputation.”

Many roads lead from Hanoi to St. Pölten
While the cheers are still echoing in the federal capital, work is also underway in Niederösterreich on the “Pact for Care for the Future”. But the blue-and-yellow leaders prefer to look to Vietnam, because from next week there will be 75 future specialist language and culture courses at Hanoi University. These “superheroes of nursing” will therefore follow a semester of theory and practice at the IMC Nursing Center of the Krems University of Applied Sciences.

Institute director Markus Golla is already full of anticipation: “Unfortunately, this project is ten years late, but it is still an EU-wide flagship project. The response has been really great and we hope for corresponding progress,” Golla told the “Krone”.

Nursing misery also preoccupies the Chancellor
The importance of these measures is now underlined in all functions. After speaking with Chancellor Karl Nehammer, Vösendorf Mayor Hannes Koza said it was “the need of the hour” to tackle the care issue in a sustainable way: “Everyone should be aware that more efforts are needed here says the local manager.
