The gas storage facilities in Austria are already 90 percent full by mid-August. This equates to more than 87 terawatt hours of natural gas – roughly the gas consumption of the entire previous year.
In 2022, this level was not reached until the end of October. However, efforts to reduce gas consumption have paid off, according to a press release from the Ministry of Climate and the Federal Chancellery.
“Gas supply assured in winter”
Austria’s gas reserves would provide protection not only against supply bottlenecks, but also against price increases on world markets. “Austria’s gas supply for the winter is thus assured,” noted Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP). “Full storage space is our most important safety cushion. We have consistently pursued this goal since the beginning of the Russian attack on Ukraine,” said Climate Protection Minister Leonore Gewessler (Greens).
At the end of March this year, the storage facilities were about two-thirds full. A year earlier that was just under 14 percent.
