Hundreds of companies are still waiting for their compensation due to the Corona lockdowns. Others have – possibly or already proven – received too much. How Austria “misinterpreted” the aid guidelines from Brussels and what this all has to do with the envy debate: a commentary by “Krone” business editor Manfred Schumi.
New Corona problems
About 40 billion euros in Corona aid was paid out and in the beginning everyone was proud of it. Then came the ‘transparency database’, in which you could see exactly how much everyone got. A typical Austrian envy debate immediately arose. It even seemed strange that some companies received multiple payments, as each GmbH could submit its own application. This prompted the EU to take action, which was not the intention.
