Employers demand: the desire for health promotion is increasing

Whether in the home office or on-site at the office, corporate health promotion is finding its place in more and more local businesses, as more and more entrepreneurs realize how much they themselves benefit from physically and mentally fit employees. The Corporate Challenge Austria has set itself the task of creating a new movement culture in Austria – 100% digital and location-independent.

How do entrepreneurs benefit from it?
Employees who integrate sufficient exercise into their daily lives are more motivated and therefore more productive. They take fewer sick days and are more motivated. At the same time, employees who do not have to deal with aches and pains every day are more empathetic and in a better mood. This better mood has an impact both within the team and with the customers and therefore directly on the operating result.

On behalf of SPORTS.Selection, Marketagent conducted a survey on the topic of ‘occupational health promotion’ in both 2019 and 2023 after the pandemic, which revealed the wishes of working people in Austria. Nearly 50% of employees would like more offers in the areas of nutrition, exercise and mental fitness.

Mental fitness in particular has taken on an increasingly important role in recent years, and younger generations attach particular importance to it. While 47.3% of the total population here would like more support from their company, this is even 55% among 18-29 year olds. In the ‘War of Talents’, i.e. the struggle for qualified employees, an attractive health offer from the company can be a decisive factor when choosing a career.

Companies benefit in several ways
Companies can benefit from their participation in several ways. In addition to the economic effects of physically and mentally fitter employees, participating companies, together with the Chamber of Commerce, partners and the many volunteer ambassadors, contribute to establishing a new sports culture in Austria. At the same time, the business challenge increases the basic motivation of employees and ensures that existing health-promoting offers from companies are used more often and by more employees.

Positive competition with other companies not only strengthens the team structure and identification with the company, but also gives companies the opportunity to position themselves as an attractive employer. Because your own health, both physical and mental, is becoming increasingly important for many employees.

Participants reduce their footprint and plant trees
But the environment is also a major concern for working people in Austria. Under the motto ‘Do good for your own health and at the same time for the environment’, a tree is planted for every thousandth minute of exercise. By 2022, there were already 8,633 trees, further strengthening the already footprint-reducing effect of the business challenge. Participants increasingly walk short distances or switch to cycling, resulting in a decrease in meat consumption and an increasing number of seasonal and regional products being purchased. The “Tree balance” is also displayed next to the training minutes in the “Straide” app and is intended as extra motivation.
