Date:

Consumer prices continue to rise unabated. According to a quick estimate by Statistics Austria, inflation in Austria is likely to have reached 6.8 percent in March compared to the same month last year. This is the highest value since November 1981.

Compared to February, the consumer price index (CPI) is expected to rise 2.0 percent. Energy prices remain the main drivers. In February inflation was 5.9 percent.

Fuel and energy as price drivers
“Recent increases in fuel and energy prices have further fueled inflation,” Statistics Austria director-general Tobias Thomas said in a broadcast on Friday. The CPI index level and detailed results for March will be announced on April 21.

The harmonized inflation rate (HICP), calculated for comparisons in the eurozone, stood at 6.7 percent in March 2022 compared to the same month last year, according to calculations by Statistics Austria as part of a preliminary preliminary estimate. According to the first poll, inflation was 2.3 percent compared to February.
