You often look in vain for the vibrant life in cities and villages; urban expansion and the like have fatal consequences! The ‘Krone’ delved deeper into what is happening in the various federal states when it comes to the decline of cities and city centers at model locations.
Church, town hall, train station: these locations still provide a touch of public life in our cities and rural communities. But beyond that there is often nothing but a yawning void in the local centers. Commuter traffic, thriving shopping centers on the periphery or simply urban expansion are taking their toll on the infrastructure close to the center.
While some municipalities have already almost succumbed to the extinction of the city center (see Salzburg, Wiener Neustadt or Liezen in Styria), many regions (such as Wiesing in Tyrol or St. Stefan-Afiesl in the Mühlviertel in Upper Austria) are focusing on exciting public space revitalization projects – see below for details.
