The EU continues to analyze the decree limiting the price of gas to cope with the increase in electricity
The third vice president and minister of ecological transition, Teresa Ribera, insists the formal approval by the European Commission of the gas cap approved by the governments of Spain and Portugal “will be on time”. Despite the fact that the Decree-Law regulating the gas limit for electricity production in Spain came into force last Saturday, setting a limit of EUR 48.8 for the average price per MWh for the next twelve months, the European Commission has yet to formally support the standard, which is expected to be an immediate improvement for 37% of household consumers and 70% for industrial consumers.
In last Friday’s extraordinary council of ministers, in which the government announced the adoption of the measure, the holder of the Ecological Transition portfolio pointed out that approval by Brussels could take about “two weeks”. “I think it will go very quickly. I cannot put the date on a procedure that the European Commission services manage themselves, but in all the conversations we have with them in the context of the communication, assuming that they have a very deep understanding of each of the details of the decree laws of Portugal and Spain, will go very quickly. I’m sure it will come on time,” he says.
On the other hand, Ribera has been blunt about the possibility of extending the schedule for the planned shutdown of nuclear power plants (from 2027 to 2035) and has limited himself to saying that “no” will be the case. The European Commission proposed this week to increase the participation of coal and nuclear power plants in the energy mix as part of the REPower EU package of measures to reduce Russia’s energy dependency.
