A pack of cigarettes, a newspaper, a lottery ticket and of course a chat with the tobacconist: that is a real ritual for many people. Tobacco shops, as they are officially called, have been an Austrian institution since the introduction of the tobacco monopoly by Emperor Franz Josef II. But times are changing: the ranks of smokers are thinning – which is of course positive from a health policy perspective –, newspapers and magazines are increasingly read online and stamps and parking tickets are gradually being abolished.
