Especially fuels: household energy will become more expensive again in September

Date:

Household energy prices rose for the second month in a row in September. Compared to August, they increased by 1.9 percent, the energy agency said in a press release. The main reason for this is the increase in fuel and heating oil prices. According to the Energy Agency, energy prices had a slightly dampening effect on overall inflation levels, and prices were also 1.3 percent below the level of the same month of the previous year.

Prices at petrol pumps in particular have risen recently: for a typical 50-litre tank you had to pay between 85 and 89 euros for both diesel and super. According to the energy agency, this corresponds to about 5 euros more than in August 2023. However, compared to the previous year, refueling was still slightly cheaper, especially with diesel.

“Typical” annual need for heating oil: 200 euros more
A similar picture emerges for heating oil, where the price rose significantly month-on-month, up 6.2 percent. The Energy Agency illustrates this using the ‘typical’ annual requirement of 3,000 liters: in September almost 4,000 euros had to be paid for this, about 200 euros more than in the previous month of August. After all, a look at current market data suggests that “a slight relaxation in gasoline, diesel and heating oil prices can be expected.”

Slight decreases in electricity and gas
Prices for district heating also increased by one percent compared to the previous month. Year-on-year, this is even an increase of 22.2 percent, although prices have generally fallen in recent months. Prices for gas (minus 0.6 percent compared to August) and electricity (minus 1.4 percent compared to August) fell slightly.

While gas prices were significantly above last year’s levels (up 38.6 percent), electricity prices fell sharply compared to September 2022, down 23.7 percent. Prices for wood pellets and firewood were also slightly higher than in August, but there were also price decreases compared to the previous year.
