The American software company Microsoft wants to use its own chips for artificial intelligence (AI) in the future. On Wednesday, at a developer conference with Maia, the company presented its own AI chip, which will be used to perform demanding tasks in the internal Azure cloud.
This adds the company to the list of major tech companies developing critical technologies in-house due to the high cost of providing AI services.
The highlights of the Microsoft conference review:
No sale planned
Microsoft has no plans to sell the chips. “We believe this provides us with a path to deliver better solutions to our customers that are faster, more cost-effective and of higher quality,” said Scott Guthrie, executive vice president of Microsoft’s cloud and AI group.
Microsoft’s second chip, called Cobalt, is intended to both save internal costs and be an answer to Microsoft’s main cloud rival, Amazon Web Services. So far, Nvidia has dominated the AI chip market.
