The German trade union Verdi has called on shop workers across the country to issue a warning on Friday. “This week we start with Edeka. For this purpose, actions will take place in front of warehouses and branches,” announced Silke Zimmer of the union.
Branches in Hamburg, Cologne and Chemnitz, among others, are affected. According to Verdi’s announcement, there will be a few more weeks of action until Easter. “This is just the first of several highlights of strikes and actions in the coming weeks,” the report said. “We want to specifically target the blockers in the employer camp.”
The current round of collective bargaining in German retail has been going on for months. Even numerous warning strikes, for example just before Christmas, could not change the situation. In all regions, Verdi sometimes demands at least 2.50 euros more wages per hour and a term of one year for employees. Additional requirements apply depending on the state.
Participation has been quite low so far
Talks at the highest level at the federal level have not produced any progress recently. Verdi calls on employers to block negotiations. The warning strikes have had little impact on customers so far, as not many workers took part in the industrial action.
