Safety defects – Babboe cargo bikes: recall and sales ban

Date:

The sale of the popular Babboe cargo bikes is officially prohibited until further notice. “The safety of cargo bikes is not sufficiently guaranteed,” the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority NVWA said on Friday. Trade in Austria is also affected.

The Dutch company must also recall eight models of bicycles: Babboe City/City-E/City Mountain; Babboe Curve/Curve-E/Curve Mountain; Babboe Big/Big-E; Babboe Dog/Dog-E; Babboe Max-E; Babboe Mini-E/Mini Mountain; Babboe Pro Trike/ Trike-E/ Trike XL; Babboe Carve-E/ Carve Mountain.

Reports of broken bicycle frames
The Dutch TV channel RTL initially reported serious security shortcomings. There are numerous reports of bicycle frames breaking without any outside influence. The authority accuses the company of failing to report the defects. The cause of the defects was also not sufficiently investigated and no measures were taken. It is currently being investigated whether a criminal investigation should be initiated.

Authority: “There is a risk of serious injury”
According to the authority, the risk of frame breakage of the bicycles that have now been recalled is high. “This can lead to very serious injuries. For example, if children fall out of the box while cycling. Especially in heavy traffic.” The authority advises customers to stop using Babboe bicycles for the time being.
