The domestic eyewear market is highly competitive. Pearle, Fielmann, Hartlauer and many specialty stores therefore attract their customers with service and insurance to keep the high costs within limits. The “Krone” knows how badly the Austrians really see things.
New glasses cost money. “The prices vary enormously,” says optician spokesman Markus Gschweidl. For models with progressive lenses you currently have to pay an average of 552 euros; for special lenses and fine frames, bills of more than 1,500 euros are not uncommon. According to a recent study, 2.3 million visual aids are sold over the counter in this country every year. Chains already have a 60 percent market share based on the number of units, while online has shrunk to seven percent.
