The season has already started in the Austrian asparagus stronghold of Marchfeld in Lower Austria. The first freshly harvested stems can already be purchased from farm shops and direct marketers.
The company Edlingers from Raasdorf announced that it had started selling fresh asparagus “earlier than ever”. The Mazzucato family (Theuringer) has also opened their farm shop: “Thanks to the warm temperatures, the asparagus season starts much earlier than expected this year.”
The warm soil allows asparagus to sprout
Green asparagus in Austria actually has its seasonal peak from mid-April to mid-June. His white colleague, who is especially popular in Austrian spring and summer cuisine, is a little later.
The fact that the first freshly harvested poles can be purchased in March is due to the mild weather and relatively moderate rainfall. The plants need warm soil temperatures and sunny March obviously suited them very well.
More than 750 hectares of cultivation area
Although Marchfeld is considered an asparagus stronghold, the 750 hectare growing area across Austria now extends as far as Vorarlberg. In Austria, 127 companies produce green or purple asparagus, while 82 companies will soon harvest white asparagus.
