From the perspective of competitor Airbus, the problems at American aircraft manufacturer Boeing could put pressure on the entire sector. “Boeing’s problems could make more people wonder how safe flying actually is,” Christian Scherer, head of civil aircraft construction at the European group, told “Wirtschaftswoche”. This “casts a shadow over the entire sector”.
According to Scherer, it is now more difficult to register new aircraft. “There is greater pressure from all observers, including regulators.”
Airbus does not benefit
Scherer contradicted the assumption that Airbus was benefiting from the difficulties of its biggest competitor. Airplane prices are rising because demand exceeds supply.
In an incident early this year, an almost new Alaska Airlines Boeing 737-9 Max lost a fuselage fragment while climbing. Since the incident, Boeing has been under increasing pressure to improve quality controls.
The crash of two 737-Max planes in October 2018 and March 2019 killed 346 people. According to research, software in the plane was one of the causes of the accident.
