McDonald’s is increasingly relying on artificial intelligence to take orders. Thousands of restaurants around the world will be converted accordingly this year. This requires customers to behave a certain way in the drive-thru or they may not be served…
Anyone who wants to order something to eat at McDonald’s in McDrive will probably have to comply with certain rules in the future, otherwise it will not be served.
McDrive switch trained on AI
This is evident from an image (see below) that a user in the US published on the social news portal Reddit. At a McDonald’s branch you will see a drive-thru counter. A sign here indicates that an AI is being trained on this switch.
This is what McDonald’s wants to hear from customers
To ensure that the ordering process runs smoothly, customers must follow a number of rules. McDonald’s asks you to speak clearly, to use the exact names on the menu for the items you want, and to answer any counter questions from the AI about the item in question before ordering the next item.
The Reddit posting does not indicate which industry the test is currently being conducted in. It is probably an American branch.
Not everything works
McDonald’s has been testing the use of AI in the ordering process in the United States since 2023 – which is not always successful, as shown by various clips on TikTok. For example, for one TikToker, the AI simply continuously added Chicken McNuggets to her order (see below).
AI technology soon also in Austria?
By the way, the technology could soon also be used in German-speaking countries. McDonald’s announced a partnership with Google in a press release in December 2023. As part of this, the company aims to connect thousands of restaurants worldwide to the Google Cloud and improve the user experience with the use of artificial intelligence and other technologies.
McDonald’s Vice President Brian Rice promises: “This will make restaurant management easier, but most importantly the experience for our customers and employees even better.”
