Record broken – tourism starts the summer season with momentum

Domestic tourism got off to an impressive start this summer. In May, the number of overnight bookings in hotels, guesthouses and holiday apartments increased by 14.6 percent to 9.5 million compared to the same month last year. German holidaymakers in particular have booked en masse.

The numbers at the start of the season have never been so strong. “This is the highest number of overnight stays ever recorded for the month of May,” emphasizes Tobias Thomas, Managing Director of Statistics Austria. The increase in the number of bookings is also due to the fact that the Pentecost holidays in the large German states fell completely in May this year.
