Employees of the American technology group Apple in the US state of Maryland have voted to join a union. More than 100 Apple store employees voted overwhelmingly on Saturday to join the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, the union writes on its website.
Local Apple employees in Towson, near Baltimore, have “the support of a solid majority of our colleagues,” they wrote in a letter to Apple CEO Tim Cook. Joining the union is not against Apple management. At Reuters’ request, an Apple spokesperson declined to comment at this time.
First Union in an Apple Store
Apple employees in Towson are the first Apple retailers to join a union. Apple employees in Atlanta who wanted to join a union withdrew their application last month. They justified this with attempts at intimidation.
Efforts to form unions are increasing at some major US companies, including Amazon.com and Starbucks.
