It’s just a recommendation. But as is often the case in the EU, a recommendation can quickly turn into a ban. In any case, the discussed end to cigarettes in the Schanigarten is causing a lot of commotion among Viennese. Sascha Schützenauer, a non-smoker herself, has been running the “Amterl” on the Floridsdorfer Spitz for 22 years. Many regular guests, 80 percent of whom are smokers. “I am happy that smoking is no longer allowed indoors, but a ban outside would be a horror. “That ruins everything,” says the innkeeper, who relies on Viennese cuisine.
