As demand for cigarettes in Europe has fallen dramatically in recent years, tobacco giant Philip Morris is now taking the consequences and ending production in Germany. The American company announced on Tuesday that it is now looking for “socially acceptable solutions” for 372 workers and employees.
The company has carefully investigated all available options for adjusting production, the statement said. Production at Philip Morris Manufacturing GmbH in Berlin is expected to cease in the first half of 2025. f6 Cigarettenfabrik GmbH & Co KG in Dresden will follow in the middle of next year.
“Difficult but necessary steps”
Philip Morris International continuously assesses its business processes to ensure operational efficiency, said Jan Otten, general manager of both German factories, according to the statement. “We are aware that difficult but necessary decisions must be made to adapt to current market developments.” The focus will be on supporting the affected employees during this difficult phase.
The head office of the German subsidiary is located in Gräfelfing near Munich. According to Philip Morris, a total of about 1,400 people work in Germany. The international group includes the cult brands Marlboro and Chesterfield.
