In this year’s collective bargaining negotiations, signs point to strikes in some sectors. According to the ÖGB, there were slightly fewer strike hours in the previous year than in previous years. In 2021, the number of strike hours was 11,368 with approximately 5,000 participating employees. In 2020 there were more work interruptions: the number of strike hours was around 29,500, that of employees 9883.
In 2019, there were 5,260 workers or approximately 15,800 strike hours. In 2018 there were more strikes with almost 71,500 hours and just over 37,900 people involved.
In the past, not only have there been work stoppages related to collective bargaining, there have also been protests for job preservation or, in 2003, against the pension and ÖBB reform.
Various sectors are still negotiating deals
While the metal industry and the social economy can already demonstrate that the KV negotiations are complete, other sectors are still bickering. Warning strikes are in the air in retail and breweries. The rail workers also want to strike after the broken-off KV negotiations in the rail sector. The union members demand 400 euros gross per month more on all KV and actual wages.
Employees in religious hospitals already stopped working on Wednesday morning (see video above). Negotiations in the cleaning industry, with security personnel and with Telekom and Postbus employees have also failed so far.
