Vacancies – offer the very last chance at your first holiday job

Date:

Where there are still jobs for the summer and which must be taken into account.

The summer holidays are just around the corner and about 100,000 young people get a taste of working life. Although most holiday jobs have already been taken, there are still opportunities in some places. Especially in tourism, there is often a lack of waiters or kitchen help. The AMS recently reported 116 holiday jobs in the accommodation and gastronomy sector, 56 in retail and 44 in manufacturing.

Since many companies do not report holiday vacancies to the AMS, it is worth asking: Fast food giant McDonald’s offers about 100 open holiday internships – with a gross monthly salary of 1,630 euros. The Austrian Post takes 1900 Sommerpostler into service for the delivery. She has already found most of them and especially in Western Austria there are opportunities for remaining positions. The monthly amount is around 1200 euros.

Employment agencies that place employees with companies for a limited period of time are good places for holiday jobs. Hofmann Personal still has almost 100 vacancies with a focus on Styria in various industrial sectors (automotive suppliers, chemicals, electronics, paper) and in retail. Trenkwalder and TTI also say there are job openings every day.

When young people sign their first employment contract, ambiguities often arise. You must read carefully and know about rights: In principle, employees must always record everything in writing on service receipts or in the contract for a definite period of time. “While a verbal agreement is legally correct, we recommend a written one,” said AK expert Jasmin Haindl.

Right to vacation and paid overtime
Holiday jobbers have the same rights as other employees with regard to working hours and wages: the salary depends on the collective labor agreement, working time schemes and payment of overtime are mandatory. Christmas and holiday bonuses are usually paid pro rata. Employers must also register their interns with Social Security. “Anyone who works for a month is also entitled to two vacation days,” Haindl says.

In addition, it can also help to note working hours and breaks. At the end of the employment relationship, the expert advises checking the payroll and “no waivers or in general sign anything blindly”. Otherwise you could lose claims for overtime etc. After the end of the summer job, it makes sense to keep the documents. Anyone who earns less than 11,000 euros per year will receive a refund of overpaid wage tax from the tax authorities, often automatically.
