The government approves an increase of €60 per month for non-contributory pensions and maintains the increase in the minimum vital income already in force, benefiting approximately 1.2 million citizens
The income of 1.7 million vulnerable citizens will increase by 15% from July 1 to the end of the year thanks to two of the measures included in the anti-crisis plan that the government approved this Saturday: increase in payroll by 15% to almost 450,000 beneficiaries of a non-contributory pension while maintaining the Minimum Vital Income (IMV) increase that has been in effect for three months and is enjoyed by nearly 1.2 million vulnerable people.
About half a million pensioners, the most vulnerable and especially women, will receive an extra EUR 60 per month, about EUR 360 more the rest of the year, to cope with the current scenario of runaway prices. a measure resulting from an agreement with Bildu.
Specifically, there are currently 445,069 people who receive a non-contributory pension – according to data published in May by Imserso -, of which about 65% are women who have not worked, or at least not long enough to access a non-contributory pension, for which a minimum of 15 years of contributions is required.
Unlike non-contributory benefits, there are only two types of non-contributory benefits: retirement, for those who have reached statutory retirement age (66 years and two months in 2022); and disability, for those who are between the ages of 18 and 65 and have a recognized disability of at least 65%. The beneficiaries, who must be residents on Spanish territory and have been in the country for at least ten years (retirement) or five years (disability), may not exceed an annual income of more than 5,890 euros, the same amount against which the non-contributory pension, but the amount increases if you live with other family members.
In total, 264,737 people currently receive a non-contributory old-age pension averaging EUR 421 per month. If the 15% increase agreed with Bildu is finally approved, they will receive a bonus of just over 63 euros per month, 442 euros in total if the seven payrolls they will receive between now and the end of the year are added ( in December they will have an extra charge).
In addition, there are 180,332 disability benefits, with an average amount of EUR 462 per month. The beneficiaries will see their income rise by EUR 70 per month from July, for a total of EUR 491 at the end of 2022.
The monthly cost to the State of non-contributory pensions is just over 195 million euros, so an increase of 15% until December means an extra expenditure of almost 25 million.
Once 2022 ends, the executive will have the tough decision to take this increase as a vested right and keep it next year or go back and cut that extra 15% exactly for the groups that need it most.
