The huge price increases and the tremors about getting enough gas make the expansion of renewable energy sources more urgent than ever, says Alfons Haber, head of the energy authority E-Control, drawing clear conclusions from the current situation. “The energy industry is willing to invest, but often goes wrong because of approval times. Or, for example, wind turbines have been approved, but not yet the necessary networks.” Federal, provincial and local governments must remove barriers, transparent information can reduce resistance among the population.
In the near future, natural gas is needed as a buffer for fluctuating green energy, especially for electricity generation and district heating and in industry. This can also be liquefied gas, but this requires more port charging stations.
At the same time, for example, ‘green’ hydrogen must be promoted. Haber currently advises consumers in “Club 3” to buy energy-saving appliances, compare rates from energy suppliers (www.e-control.at) and possibly form an energy community with neighbors by installing a photovoltaic system. Because only low network costs are incurred internally, this reduces electricity costs.
