The Bau-Holz Niederösterreich trade union calls on construction companies to release their employees from heat. During the heat wave of 2019, every second company in Austria – 5,245 companies – took this opportunity and 39,122 construction workers were released at the time.
“Wherever the heat exceeds 32.5 degrees Celsius, I appeal to employers and customers: please stop work,” construction union man Rudolf Silvan said on Tuesday. He recalls that employers must first order heat-free, as there is no automatic right to do so.
When the heat regulation is applied, there is continued payment of wages of 60 percent for the workers. The costs would be paid in full to the employer by the construction leave and redundancy fund.
