Although the war in Ukraine is raging, many non-European airlines fly on Russian territory every day. Hundreds of Austrians are on board and travel from Vienna to Asia. The EU warns. How safe are these flights, especially after an airplane was shot in Kazakhstan? Krone+ knows more.
The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) described flights over Russia as “high risk” in a security advice that was published only a few days ago. The war in Ukraine entails the risk “that civil aircraft in the airspace of the Russian federation (…) will be unintentionally targeted.” Especially the airspace in Western Russia should be avoided after an Azerbaijan Airlines plane was shot near the city of Aktau in West Kazachstan at the end of December, Easa demands.
