First varieties already rare – war in Ukraine leads to “Tschick bottleneck”

Date:

The Philip Morris group is struggling with production problems with cigarette packs. Some varieties are currently rare commodities.

It was announced a few weeks ago, but in recent days it has actually become noticeable: As reported, tobacco company Philip Morris – market leader in Austria – is struggling with supply problems for a number of popular varieties.

Currently no orders possible
Red Marlboro (classic pack, 20 pieces) are currently no longer available in many tobacconists and cigarette vending machines. But varieties such as Chesterfield, Philip Morris (blue) and L&M are also rare on the shelf.

“For some varieties, orders cannot be taken at the moment,” says Philip Morris. Problems would arise in the packaging material supply chain.

Everything depends on the package
So it’s not about the Tschick itself, but about the package. The production of cigarette packs is more complicated than one might think, important components could not be found. And yes, there is a direct link to the war in Ukraine and the sanctions against Russia.

There is good news, at least for smokers of red Marlboro: tobacconists can order the popular variant again from this week. For other affected brands, there are no signs of easing for the time being.
