Partner Wanted – Temu wants to sell food in Austria

Date:

According to media reports, the Chinese Online Marktplaats Temu wants to expand the supermarket in Europe en masse and sell European foods in Austria.

“The Temu platform is open to sellers in Austria and other European countries. Most foods at Temu are offered by local dealers,” said the online retailer. The company has not announced any details about the expansion plans of Austria.

According to the German “food newspaper”, a newly built European Temu team is currently the target in Europe to expand the range of articles such as snacks, confectionery, drinks, but also cosmetics and garden products. The goal is to create an offer “from Europe for Europe”.

Online Marketplace does not have its own warehouse
TEM lures customers with low prices and offers a wide range of products, from clothing, kitchen or beauty products to electronic goods. In Europe, 103 million people recently visited the website of the online marketplace per month, and in Austria this was around 1.8 million, according to the Temu transparency report. The online marketplace does not have its own warehouse and transfers directly between Asian manufacturers and buyers around the world.

Proponents of the consumer warn of less product quality and security. The AK Oberösterreich Chamber of Labor informed at the beginning of July: Flipflops sold via Temu “Extremely strongly charged with chemicals with a risk of health”. Since half past 2024, European retailers have also been able to offer their products at Temu.

In Austria, the online marketplace in the field of food currently has a very limited reach, especially nuts and pasta are sold. “We have dedicated teams that provide a large number of categories to expand the local range and improve the service for European consumers,” said a Temu Company spokesperson. By working with local companies, they want to “offer an even greater selection, faster deliveries and products that reflect the local taste as well as possible”. Temu has not commented on planned categories of food products in Austria.

Trade Association warns of “mass medium risks”
The dealers and proponents of environmental and consumers in Europe have long urged measures against Temu, Shein and Aliexpress. The Austrian Trade Association warned on Wednesday “once again of enormous risks in the medium term due to Asian cheap market places for consumers, the environment and the European business location”.

“The food trade is part of the critical infrastructure, it takes care of the local delivery of the entire population,” says Rainer, director of the Commercial Association, Will in a broadcast. Now “in this sector is the next wave of Asian low -cost import for the door”. “This is a very sensitive area in which quality, traceability and security should not be negotiation,” Well warned.

The EU MP Sophia Kircher (ÖVP) also criticized “Dumping-Warflut” from Asia by Temu, Shein & Co. “It moves local retailers, distorts competition and far too often these products not only ignore our high European safety and health standards, but are really harmful to health and wise serious defects,” Kircher is in a launch.
