Minister Teresa Ribera assures that Spain will be “in solidarity” with Europe and offer its regasification capacity, but more drastic measures are not envisaged
The Minister for Ecological Transition, Teresa Ribera, stated Wednesday morning in the port of Bilbao that the government does not foresee any restrictions on gas supply this winter. Neither for households, nor for industry. The third vice president confirms that Spain will be “solidarity with Europe”, but that the best way to help its community partners in the crisis caused by the confrontation with Russia after the invasion of Ukraine is to improve the infrastructure and “our regasification capacity” to reinforce.
Ribera insists Spanish citizens have been “paying the consequences of being an energy island” for years. In that sense, he has assured that a lot of money has been invested in preparing these infrastructures and that the Spaniards do not deserve to face restrictions. Ribera has highlighted the capacity of Spain’s ports to be an entry point for liquefied gas to the European Union. “We are in favor of savings and efficiency,” Ribera said, but stressed that other measures are not being considered.
The minister has referred to the possible reopening of the Nord Stream gas pipeline, which could take place tomorrow after a so-called technical standstill. Ribera has pointed out that what Vladimir Putin has done is “blackmail”. For this reason, he has wondered whether the return to service of this pipeline will be effective. “The problem is that only 15% of the capacity has been shipped from Russia for a year.”
Ribera made these statements during the launch of the first floating platform with an offshore wind turbine in the Bay of Biscay, a 40-meter-high giant that the Biscayan firm Saitec has built and will test over the next two years, as a preparatory step to the start-up of the first off-shore park on the peninsula, off the coast of Armintza.
