Top diplomat Elisabeth Tichy-Fisslberger approaches the General Court of the European Union (EuG) as a judge. The 65-year-old successfully attended a hearing before the responsible selection committee at EU level and was formally confirmed on Wednesday, the Federal Chancellery announced. Minister of Europe Karoline Edtstadler (ÖVP) was pleased that this was the first time a woman from Austria had served as a judge at the General Court of the European Union.
According to Edtstadler, Tichy-Fisslberger enjoys “an extraordinary professional reputation and is distinguished by her many years of experience in international organizations as a diplomat for the Republic of Austria. She will fulfill this position with great expertise and experience.”
“Top lawyer with years of experience”
Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg (ÖVP) stated that with Tichy-Fisslberger “the Court of Justice of the European Union gets a top lawyer with many years of international experience. I am very pleased that an Austrian diplomat has been chosen for the position. This recognizes the contribution of the Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the rule of law and EU law.”
Most recently Representative to the United Nations in Geneva
The career diplomat was most recently the Austrian representative to the United Nations in Geneva. In 2020, she chaired the UN Human Rights Council meeting in Geneva at the suggestion of the Western European Group of States. Tichy-Fisslberger is a proven EU expert, having worked for the European Commission as early as the 1980s and at the Austrian EU representation in Brussels from 1993 to 2002.
Term of office lasts six years
Tichy-Fisslberger succeeds the previous judge Viktor Kreuschitz. Like Tichy-Fisslberger, he has now been appointed to a full six-year term. The second post remains occupied by the former head of the Federal Chancellery’s constitutional service, Gerhard Hesse. As a result of Brexit, Hesse entered the EU court because Austria had been given a second right-hand position as a result of the British departure. The General Court of the European Union, together with the European Court of Justice (CJEU), is responsible for the correct interpretation and application of EU law.
