The Regional Film Library ‘Francisco Rabal’, under the command of Ángel Cruz and affiliated with the Ministry of the Presidency, Tourism, Culture and Sports, through the Institute of Cultural Industries and the Arts (ICA), has planned several cycles with many novelties for this quarter, including, for example, thirteen titles that once influenced Arturo Pérez-Reverte [miembro de la Real Academia Española desde 2003 y el escritor vivo originario de la Región más universal]and a monograph dedicated to the 40th anniversary of the Autonomy Statute of the Region of Murcia.

‘Captain Blood’ (Michael Curtiz, 1953) and ‘Rojo y negro’ (Carlos Arévalo, 1942), scheduled for September 24; ‘To have and not to have’ (Howard Hawks, 1944), screened September 27; ‘The Nail’ (Rafael Gil, 1944); the iconic ‘Fort Apache’ (John Ford, 1948), scheduled for October 5-8; ‘El Gatopardo’ (Luchino Visconti, 1963), ‘Iván’s youth’ (Andrei Tarkovsky, 1962) and ‘A damned mess’ (Pietro Germi, 1959) are some of the films Pérez-Reverte selected and which, according to what he said in the presentation of the programming, the general secretary of the ministry of the presidency, tourism, culture and sports, Juan Antonio Lorca, “condensed his love of cinema”.

It is to celebrate the return of the cycle ‘The film of his life’, in which members of the Murcian culture and society come to the film library to present, from an emotional point of view, the film that has scarred them. Among the following participants are the writer and psychotherapist Lola López Mondéjar; José Belmonte Serrano, professor of Spanish literature at the University of Murcia; Antonio Peñarrubia, general manager of 7 TV; and the Goya Award-winning actor Carlos Santos, in the cast of Paco Arango’s next film.

“The Filmoteca offers a diverse, participatory offer that reflects all the sensitivities and realities of cinema-goers in the region,” defends Juan Antonio Lorca. Thanks to the collaboration of the La Caixa Foundation, the ‘Always Accompanied by Cinema’ program can be launched, in which the Filmoteca will become a meeting place and promote the integration of the elderly in the cultural fabric.

You can also enjoy the filmography of Pier Paolo Pasolini, on the occasion of the centenary of the birth of the Italian genius. The cycle ‘Suspense in 35mm’ responds perfectly, according to Ángel Cruz, to Filmoteca’s commitment to project the works in the original formats in which they were conceived, and we will offer great masterpieces of this genre, all not published on our website. screens, such as ‘A Light in the Underworld’ (Sam Fuller, 1964) and ‘The Detective’ (Gordon Douglas, 1968)».

Also screened on 35mm is a selection of essential comedies directed by celluloid masters Frank Capra, Blake Edwards, Woody Allen, Stanley Donen, Ernt Lubitsch, George Cukor and Billy Wilde.

Emblematic authors of the ‘Nouvelle Vague’ such as Godard, Varda, Truffaut, Pialat or Resnais return to the big screen of the old Salzillo Cinemas, in twelve short films and two feature films in recently restored and remastered versions, most of which are unreleased in our country. Simultaneously with the celebration of Spanish Film Day, on October 6, the Filmoteca screens ‘Songs for after a war’ (Basilio Martín Patino, 1976), ‘El Clavo’ (Rafaél Gil, 1944) and ‘Summer 1993’ (Carla Simon, 2017). On the other hand, ‘La Sala de los Cineastas’ will highlight the richness and diversity of Spanish cinematography.

Thanks to the collaboration of the Fundación Mediterráneo and coinciding with the VI Flamenco Festival, a new cycle on cinema and flamenco will be launched, which will discuss some of Carlos Saura’s most emblematic productions, such as ‘Flamenco’ (1995) and ‘Sevillanas’. (1991).

On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the Statute of Autonomy, the Spanish cinema of the transition will be assessed “in detail” through a thematic cycle that, as Lorca and Cruz explained, “will treat films that were decisive and a before and after , both cultural and cinematographic, and that served to give an indisputable testimony to some crucial years of recent history, compiled by the professor of cinema history at the University of Murcia, Joaquín Cánovas».

The restoration, conservation and dissemination of the region’s audiovisual heritage are part of the Filmoteca’s objectives. In the coming months the emphasis will therefore be on making the work of the Archives department visible through the cycle ‘La Memoria Filmada’. The Regional Film Archive is organizing the premiere of the new version of the documentary ‘Francisco por Paco’, directed by Benito Rabal, on whose restoration and re-editing the Film Archive has contributed.

News from ‘Murcan Filmmakers’ will be scheduled regularly and the Filmoteca will continue to work with Amnesty International, Cáritas, the Neutral Point of Promotion for Mediation of the Region of Murcia, the Superior Court of Justice of Murcia and ICAMUR (Bar Association of Murcia) “To make visible the problems that plague our society through moving images is not only an inalienable commitment for us, but also an obligation”.
