Andrea Motis opens the Cartagena Jazz

The forty-first edition of the Cartagena Jazz Festival will take place from November 2 to 19. It returns with a program full of great legends of jazz music and restores outdoor performances not held in this format since 2019. The official opening of the festival is on November 3 with Andrea Motis, who will present his album ‘Loopholes’. at the Nuevo Teatro Circo, at 8.30 pm (20 euros). The day before, on November 2, Elena Sáez and the quartet ‘Las Causas’ will perform (Mr. Witt Café, 9.30 pm, free).

Programming continues with Lady Blackbird performing for the first time in Spain and premiering in Cartagena on November 4. Nicknamed the “Grace Jones of jazz” by Gilles Peterson, (8:30 pm, Nuevo Teatro Circo, 18 euros).

On November 5, the Steam Brass Band (Plaza del Icue, 12:30 pm, free) and the band Seun Kuti and Egypt 80 (New Circus Theater, 8:00 pm, 20 euros). The next day, the protagonist is the Cuban pianist Iván ‘Melón’ Lewis (Terrace of the Batel Wall, 12.30 pm, 10 euros).

The festival will resume on Thursday 10 November with a performance by the band Hermes Jazz Reunion (Mr. Witt Café, 12.30 pm, free). On the second Friday of the festival, the American double bassist Ron Carter stars in a quartet formation with ‘Ron Carter Foursight’ (New Circus Theatre, 8.30 pm, 20 euros). On Saturday September 12, the group A Ritmo de Swing (Plaza del Icue, 12:30, free) and the Cuban Chucho Valdés (New Teatro Circo, 20:00, 20 euros). The weekend will conclude with a show by Jaén pianist Chico Pérez (Terrace of the Batel wall, 12.30 pm, 10 euros) and saxophonist Kenny Garret (New Circus Theatre, 7 pm, 18 euros).

In the last week of the Cartagena Jazz Festival, the Cartagena horn player Pedro Miguel Núñez will be present (Thurs 17, at the Mr. Witt Café, 9.30 pm, free), fulfilling the festival’s objective of having a voice to give to the musicians of the port city.

The third Friday (November 18) will be dedicated to the recognized as one of the most important values ​​of the Spanish and European music scene, the Spanish pianist Moisés P. Sánchez, who will recreate the fifteen Inventions for keyboard by JS Bach (New Theater Circo, 8.30 pm, 15 euros).

Al Di Meola, the American musician, is scheduled for November 19 (New Teatro Circo, 8:00 pm, 20 euros) in the closing act of the festival, with the presentation of his album ‘Across the universe’, a tribute to The Beatles . On the same day, the Cartagena band Big Band Conservatorio Cartagena (Plaza del Icue, 12.30 pm, free) will perform in the morning.

The closing of this jazz festival with great national and international artists of this genre will be on Sunday 20 November with the instrumental band Los Mambo Jambo (Terraza de la Muralla El Batel, 12.30 pm, 10 euros).
