Multiculturalism. From today to Saturday, San Javier will host a conference dedicated to the neighboring country with crafts, gastronomy and music

From today, Morocco will play a special role in the cultural days dedicated to this country by the association Al Makan de Murcia, starting today and ending next Saturday. The San Javier Library and the Príncipe de Asturias Park in Santiago de la Ribera are the locations chosen for the celebration of various activities such as exhibitions, conferences, gastronomy, music and crafts.

Today, at 8:00 pm, in the library of San Javier, Gonzalo Sánchez, president of Al Makan, and Munir Oujaidi, a member of the entity and a resident of Santiago de la Ribera, will display 10 panels of images depicting some of the the most amazing sights of the Gulimín Oued Noun region, the so-called gateway to the Sahara, such as the beaches of Legzira (Sidi Ifni), as well as the horse racing of Tantán, and other festivals and traditions. An area in the south of Morocco, invited for this first edition, will be present with a delegation from the regional council chaired by Embarka Boaida.

Activities will continue this Friday at 6 pm in the auditorium of the San Javier library, with the conference “Don’t call me an immigrant (Moroccans who have changed the region of Murcia)” by the journalist and sociologist, Paulino Ros, who will emphasize lay on “the contribution to the economy, social life, cultural wealth… of the community of Morocco to the municipality of San Javier and the region of Murcia.” “We have to erase the term immigrant from our minds when we talk about people who were born here, they come from Murcia, even if they are called Mohamed or Khadija,” he emphasizes.

On Saturday 29, between 19:00 and 22:00, visitors can see examples of handicrafts, art, Arabic calligraphy, books, Moroccan cuisine… tea and sweets typical of the country in two traditional rooms accompanied by musical performances by groups such as Dakka Marakchiya, from Torre Pacheco.

The councilor for social rights, Estíbaliz Masegosa, and the president of the association, Gonzalo Sánchez, point out that the aim of these conferences is “to publicize and strengthen the relations between the people of Morocco and San Javier”. In addition, Sánchez indicates that the aim of the association is to bring the populations of the two countries, Spain and Morocco, closer together through meetings and activities that it will continue to organize in other municipalities of the Murcia region.
