Math_TalentUM, UMU math competition, consolidates its participation figures

Date:

It concludes the first phase by announcing the classified teams and highlighting the consolidation of educational centers within the competition

The University of Murcia (UMU) promotes the scientific skills of young Murcians with a competition based on mathematical matter: Math_TalentUM, which already has four editions offering them the opportunity to enter the scientific world through this science.

During the first school year, the participating teams sent their proposals in the form of videos in which they showed sketches of exercises, games or performances based on mathematics. After a preliminary selection, ten teams have been selected from each of the three categories (5th and 6th grades, first cycle of ESO and second cycle of ESO with basic FP) to compete in this second phase of the competition with the mathematical project they use as a reference to participate, thus demonstrating their numerical, geometric, logic and arithmetic skills and promoting the development of new didactics for understanding an abstract subject for students, such as mathematics. For this they will make a new video of a maximum of 8 minutes before March 24.

Once the deadline has passed, the projects will be showcased on the competition website and a new vote will be taken to determine the finalists of the competition. The winners are determined after a final test in which they complete various math challenges on the university campus.

This new edition consolidates its journey by repeating the number of participants very similar to previous years. 78 videos were received from participating teams belonging to some twenty educational centers in the Region. The high participation in the category corresponding to the higher stages of education is striking: third and fourth from ESO together with students from basic vocational training, who entered this year’s competition as a novelty, demonstrating that each branch of education can innovate and promote in education .

This is a project organized by the UMU Department of Mathematics with the financial support of the Departments of Mathematics, Statistics and Operations Research, and the cooperation of the Unit for Scientific Culture and Innovation (UCC+i) and the Academy of Sciences of the UMU. region of Murcia.

On January 31 at 6:00 pm, a conference by David Parra Gómez, professor at UMU and expert in constitutional law, will take place in the Ámbito Cultural Hall of El Corte Inglés in Murcia. This is the first lecture in the ‘UMU and Scientific Culture’ cycle program and will address the need to introduce a subject in compulsory education that is based on the study of the Magna Carta. prior registration is required at [email protected].
