Murcia and Cartagena do not shine in the Observatory of Culture 2022

The theater festival of Molina de Segura, declared “cultural flagship” of the region in 2022, and the Rock Imperium of Cartagena as “extraordinary novelty”. Only the La Mar de Músicas festival will appear at national level for another year

Madrid, Barcelona, ​​​​​​Valencia, Bilbao and Malaga are at the top of the Spanish cities of culture, while Murcia would rank 28th and Cartagena would rank 38th, according to the Observatory of Culture of the Contemporary Foundation, that the results of 2022. With regard to the region of Murcia, it should be noted that, among the most notable events that have taken place, the Molina de Segura Theater Festival -the cultural emblem of Murcia in 2022-, and the Rock Imperium of Cartagena as ‘excellent novelty’.

Few surprises: the Prado, Reina Sofía and Thyssen museums -in Madrid-, as well as the San Sebastián Festival and the Guggenheim Museum are among the best of the cultural offer in Spain, a country where they were very positively appreciated Picasso year , the new CaixaForum València -in whose creation Murcia-based architect Javier Peña participated-, the ‘Pamplona Meetings’ and ‘Valencia, world capital of design’.

The panel of participating experts assessed the quality and innovation of the cultural offer of the Autonomous Communities and Cities based on the programming in 2022. In this sense, Madrid, Catalonia (second again five years later), the Basque Country, The Valencian Community ( with its best historical rating) and Andalusia, in this order, stand out in the top five. In a second block are Galicia and Navarre (both with their best historical rating), Cantabria and Castilla y León. The progression of Extremadura is striking, with an increase of five places.

In terms of cities, Madrid, Barcelona (which is experiencing a major recovery) and Valencia (with the best rating) repeat themselves in the top three, followed by Bilbao, Malaga and Seville (all three also with their best historical rating). The top ten is completed by San Sebastián, Santander, Zaragoza (twice), Valladolid and La Coruña (six times).

This year, the Prado Museum is in the lead, alternating again with the Reina Sofía Museum and with the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in third place (second in the Madrid ranking). The first ten places are completed by the San Sebastián Festival, the Guggenheim Museum, the Teatro Real, CaixaForum, Matadero Madrid, the Malaga Festival and the IVAM. The relationship is rounded off with a maximum of 102 institutions and activities. Among the most notable entries this year in the rankings are the Encuentros de Pamplona 72-22 (37), the return of Primavera Sound (40), Es Baluard (46) and C3A in Córdoba (48).

The Molina de Segura theater festival leads this regional ranking for the first time, followed by La Mar de Músicas de Cartagena, the Párraga Center in Murcia, the Cartagena Film Festival and the Teatro Circo Murcia (TCM), which are equaled in second place. La Mar de Músicas only represents Murcia in the national ranking of notable events.

The panelists also identified the most notable digital proposals in 2022. Filmin again leads the ranking, followed by the Prado Museum, which stands out for its virtual tours and social networks, Fundación Telefónica (Digital Culture), Fundación ‘la Caixa’ (CaixaForum+ and Symphony), Teatro Real (My Opera Player), Sónar 22, Fundación Juan March (Canal March), Los Podcasts as a prominent format, Matadero Madrid (El Jardín de las Delicias, Klimt, Tutankhamun) and the Reina Sofía Museum.

The Observatory of Culture also wanted to identify the best new projects of the year. Among those selected are commemorations (Meetings of Pamplona 72-22, Valencia World Capital of Design, Picasso Year, Berlanga Year, Luz de Música in Cantabria), new cultural spaces (CaixaForum Valencia, Hospital Centro Vivo de Badajoz, Nave Sotoliva in Santander) , and new festivals such as ABANEA in Gondomar, Doña Festival in the Almunia de Doña Godina or Rock Imperium in Cartagena.

Founded by La Fábrica in 2008, the Fundación Contemporánea aims to contribute to the development of cultural professionals, through activities to meet and train professionals, support entrepreneurs and promote collaboration between public and private cultural organizations . The Culture Observatory 2022 report is based on the opinion of 405 members of a panel of culture professionals, who responded in December 2022 to a questionnaire assessing the best of the cultural offer, as every year.

The Observatory of Culture also presents rankings of the best of the cultural year in each of the autonomous communities. At the top of this ranking, each community’s cultural badges are undergoing a major renovation compared to last year, with changes at the head of eleven communities: Malaga Festival in Andalusia, Peripheries [que comparte la cabeza con el Festival Asalto en Aragón], the Gijón Film Festival in Asturias, Es Baluard in the Balearic Islands, the Almagro Festival in Castilla-La Mancha, Temporada Alta in Catalonia, the Helga de Alvear Museum in Extremadura, the FIOT in Carballo in Galicia, the actual festival to which the participates in the Sala Amós Salvador in La Rioja, the Molina del Segura Festival in Murcia and the San Sebastián Festival in the Basque Country. The Phe Festival in the Canary Islands, the Botín Center in Cantabria, the Seminci in Castilla y León, the IVAM in the Valencian Community, the Prado Museum in Madrid and Baluarte in Navarra continue to be leaders in their communities.
