The project aims to make the community that preserves the first words of Spanish an international reference for the study of the language
The heart of La Rioja beat this Wednesday in Madrid with Voces de la Lengua, the cultural arm of the major Valle de la Lengua project. The strategic commitment of the Autonomous Community, promoted by the regional government, seeks to take advantage of all the opportunities offered by Spanish as a tool for transformation and territorial development. In addition, he strives to turn the small corner of La Rioja, where the language was first written, into a reference for artistic creation and innovation in Spanish.
Voces de la Lengua made its debut at the Casa de América in the capital, bringing together institutions and cultural personalities who share their ability to care for Spanish. With the voice and the music, the Riojan actor Pepe Viyuela and the interpreter Sara Águeda covered the great poet Gonzalo de Berceo; and the group Schola Antiqua gave sound to the Emilian Glosses, preserved in the monasteries of Suso and Yuso, which have just commemorated the 25th anniversary of their declaration as a World Heritage Site.
Manuela Velasco, Ana Cris, Silvia Marsó, Gato y Pipu, Jordi Sabaté, Lola Robles, Arturo Querejeta and Miguel Cubero showed the essence of a program that, through surprising formats, mixes tradition and the future, uniting the two shores of Spanish .
Ignacio García, former head of the Almagro Festival, is the artistic director of Voces de la Lengua. “Imagination has always been the first step in the transformation of society and territory,” says García, who has devised a complete cultural program that will take shape in the coming months. “Imagining the journey is what allows us to arrive, and here we intend to reach the place where language became writing, and the place where writing will speak in Voices of the Language,” he said.
The president of La Rioja, Concha Andreu, explained that the project aims to “revive” the valley where the dawn of Spanish is preserved so that it brims with life and words. «That is why we are launching a training program in Spanish and about Spanish, we are developing the tourist offer in the area, to show the visitor all its attractions, and we have embarked on this journey that is Voices of the Language, so that it sounds Spanish like it sounds nowhere else, in those woods, on those paths and on those stones that whisper their secrets,’ Andreu announced.
Valle de la Lengua wants to publicize the area that runs from Nájera to San Millán de la Cogolla, where the Suso and Yuso monasteries are located, who more than a thousand years ago recorded the first testimonies written in Spanish through performances on areas such as learning, science, tourism, culture, the knowledge industry and business opportunities, with special relevance to artificial intelligence.
