His version of “A Star Is Born,” starring Lady Gaga, did so well at the box office that Bradley Cooper reconsidered his continuity as a director. The project that led him to the decision is yet another musical, ‘Maestro’, a Leonard Bernstein biopic.
Bernstein remains one of the great composers of soundtracks for films, such as ‘West Side Story’, ‘The Magnificent Seven’, ‘Fair Value’, ‘American Rampage’, ‘Hang Noose’, ‘Rogues at full speed’, ‘Ghostbusters’ , ‘My left foot’ or ‘Far from heaven’. He was nominated eleven times for an Oscar for best music and won it for his composition ‘Millie, a modern girl’.
Now Bradley Cooper is preparing a film biography of the musician based on a script he wrote with Josh Singer, screenwriter of ‘Spotlight’ (2015), ‘The Pentagon Files’ (2017) or ‘The First Man’ (2018). Carey Mulligan has already been signed to the cast, as his wife; Felicia Montealegre (Costa Rican mother and American father), Maya Hawke, as Jamie Bernstein her firstborn; Matt Bomer, as saxophonist with whom the composer had a brief romantic relationship in which he acknowledged his bisexuality, and Jeremy Strong. Bradley Cooper will play Leonard Bernstein himself.
Leonard Bernstein (August 25, 1918 – October 14, 1990) was the first conductor born in the United States to achieve worldwide fame, famed for conducting the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, for his television concerts for young people between 1958 and 1972 and for his multiple compositions for film and theater.
Cooper has been developing the film with the Bernstein family for three years. ‘Maestro’ tells the complex love story of Leonard and Felicia, a plot spanning more than 30 years, from the time they met at a party in 1946 to two engagements, a 25-year marriage and three children: Jamie Bernstein, Alexander Bernstein and Nina Bernstein Simmons, including when he came out as bisexual, and Felicia’s death from cancer, when his music got darker.
Bernstein’s children were thrilled with the project and that it will be Carey Mulligan playing their mother: “We are absolutely delighted to have Carey playing our mother in the film,” said Jamie Bernstein. “Carey is sure to capture Felicia’s unique combination of humor, warmth, graceful beauty and depth of emotion. We also love the way Carey conveys a sort of storybook European grace, something our mother also embodied.” For his part, Bradley Cooper has revealed that “Carey has impressed me since seeing her on stage many years ago. and I haven’t missed a performance from her since. I am honored to work with such a massive talent, as well as such a lovely person in Carey.”
‘Maestro’ is produced by Cooper himself, along with relevant filmmakers such as Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese and Todd Phillips. It will be Netflix that will distribute the film, although it is the director’s wish that it be released in theaters in advance.
