“A bad result would be to come off the podium without giving 100 percent”

Date:

The Spanish representative in the Eurovision Song Contest is one of the big favorites of the edition, which will be celebrated in Italy this year

Without being a euro fan, I followed the festival from an early age. At the age of 31, Spain’s representative in the Eurovision Song Contest 2022, Chanel, arrives at the European contest with the push to have become one of the edition’s big favorites. The most optimistic bets place it in fifth place. With the song ‘SloMo’, RTVE opts this year for a proposal with Latin airs and arrangements that wink at Spanish and Latin American traditions. In addition, the Catalan artist, of Cuban descent, will be dressed in a black jumpsuit and a leather jacket, inspired by bullfighting, with more than 50,000 ‘swarowsky’ crystals, designed by Palomo Spain of Cordoba. The festival will be broadcast tomorrow at 9pm on TVE’s La 1, with commentary by Julia Varlea and Tony Aguilar, from the Italian city of Turin.

– Is the Eurovision experience as expected?

It will be great. I don’t think I will repeat an experience like participating in Eurovision again. We are all the group that came to Turin to enjoy it to the fullest and enjoy it a lot, taking advantage of every moment to rehearse. It is an experience worth freezing in the mind.

– Can you feel the warmth of the audience?

Very much. I have met people on the street and many people who have written to me. It was very nice to see them in person and to receive that warmth, always with a mask of course. It makes me excited to get messages all the time from “Euro fans” or people in general.

–How do you bear the weight of being one of the edition’s favorites?

Every time I was asked I gave the same answer. It makes me excited, but I don’t feel it as a responsibility. I’ll turn it into a motorbike so I’m not on my guard, keep working and continue up there. For me the most satisfying thing is to come off that podium in Turin and that the whole team has given one hundred percent. It is the greatest satisfaction.

“And you are not afraid of a bad result?”

We cannot verify the result. What we control is what we are going to do on stage. For me, a bad result would be not to give one hundred percent during the execution.

– What do you think are the strengths of your candidacy?

I think one of the strong points of the song is the choreography. The lighting and lights are great. The six people on stage have a very nice energy. It’s a song to enjoy and forget that we’ve just had some really bad years where we’ve been through a lot. It’s three minutes to enjoy and celebrate.

-Which country do you see as a tough rival? What is your favourite?

I have my favorites and I really like them. I like Ronela Hajati (Albania) and WRS (Romania). They are my personal favorites.

– Do you remember the first time you interacted with the song?

Frankly, the first thing I thought was ‘who is spying on me, because this song really touches me’. Loved it when I first heard it in the voice of Leroy Sanchez, the song’s composer.

– Do you have an amulet for your performance?

I got a lot of advice where they told me to enjoy the moment and be happy. And that’s what we do. I have thousands of amulets and also the occasional superstition, such as stepping on the stage with the right foot.

What was the road to Eurovision like?

It’s been really tough, but the whole team is working hourly and every day on Saturday’s performance. It was difficult, but we also knew where we stood. We’re not complaining.

He has returned to social networks. Why did you decide to return at this point after leaving Twitter after the ‘Benidorm Fest’?

– I left Twitter because it was some sort of personal justification and now I’ve come back with another post. It was because, first of all, I don’t have to hide from anything and with a message of peace. We are going to be aware that mental health is very important and that behind the screen there is a person with feelings that we should be careful with.
