To pay tribute to the figure of the scholar Francisco Cascales (Murcia, 1559-1642), coinciding with the celebration of the 400th anniversary of the publication of the Historical Speeches of the Very Noble and Loyal City of Murcia, a prepare an agenda of activities in the Municipal Museum following the cooperation agreement with the Foundation Center for Local Studies and Research of the Region of Murcia. The agreement was signed by the Mayor of Murcia, José Antonio Serrano, and by the President of the Foundation, Juan Roca Guillamón.
Serrano emphasizes that “Francisco Cascales is another prominent figure in our history, who deserves all the recognition of society because he was a man of the world, a humanist, philologist and also a historian who left his mark and a great work”
With this aim, to highlight the figure and historical relevance of the also known as Licenciado Cascales, the Municipal Council of Murcia will hold an exhibition and other cultural dissemination events at the City Museum during the 2022/2023 academic year, which will accompany the re-release of the ‘Historical Treatises…’, considered to be the first complete history of the city, written in 1621. The original of the work, as well as the facsimile executed between the Ministry of Culture and the Municipal Archives of Murcia, are deposited in the funds of the last.
This year also marks the 380th anniversary of his death. The copious critical studies that have been conducted bear witness to the interest aroused in the person and work of the Murcian scholar and humanist.
In 1634 he published Philological Letters. Thirty: one by Francisco del Villar, another by González de Sepúlveda, and twenty-eight by himself. They range from political or moral dissertations to literary opinions. Any student of golden or later poetics, or of humanism in general, cannot but refer to his work as an unforgivable reference to our humanist tradition.
