In the region of Murcia, several women have practiced photojournalism, but society is unaware of their work and career. It is a fact and this is confirmed by journalist Yousra Takaroumt in her graduation project ‘Photojournalism and Feminism. Analysis of the presence of female photojournalists in the Murcia region (1997-2021)’. A work that the journalist, editor of www.laverdad.es, summarized yesterday during the round table ‘Female photojournalists in the Murcia region’, held at the Las Claras Cultural Center of the Cajamurcia Foundation.

An activity that kicked off the XVI conference of the Association of Graphic Press Reporters of the Region of Murcia (AIG) attended by photojournalists Gloria Nicolás, Pilar Morales, Loyola Pérez de Villegas and Ainhoa Górriz. They are four of the ten professionals interviewed by the author of the work, who also has in her project the testimonials of Teresa Martín Melgarejo, Sonia Lario, Susana Sánchez, Eva Moya, Adela Pérez and Tania Costa.

The activity, presented and moderated by Yousra Takaroumt, included a speech by each of the photojournalists summarizing their careers and experience in a male-dominated profession. In addition, they shared various situations they faced and disclosed the challenges or difficulties encountered in practicing the craft.

«This work started to take shape when I was in the second year of my studies. I went to the exhibition that the Association organizes every year and I realized that there were only two women among the signatures,” says Yousra Takaroumt. «Moreover – he continues – I always met photographers on the street, but never with them; I wondered where they were.” Out of this concern arises a work with ten stories that confirm that ‘there is still a glass ceiling in the profession’.

On the other hand, the interviewees claimed to have felt discriminated against “but not by their professional colleagues, but by the citizens who still make a surprised face when they see a woman with a camera in her hand at certain events, such as football matches, and not even cut off in releasing unpleasant comments,” says the journalist.

Among the ten participants, Yousra Takaroumt highlights the figure of Gloria Nicolás (Casillas, 1977): «For me, she is the first photojournalist in the region, because, although she had a predecessor, she has been a more visible face and we immediately relate on her to photojournalism. The ‘freelance’ photographer started in the trade in 1996, in Diario16, and has worked for 13 years in ‘La Opinion’, carrying out projects for several NGOs. He is also a member of the board of directors of AIG.
