The film ‘Sofía will return’ (InDirect Film, 2022), directed by Joaquín Lisón and produced by Conchi Meseguer, will be screened in Madrid from last Friday to next Thursday, supported by the Chair of Human Rights and Nature of the University of Murcia (UMU) and by some of the national leaders in the defense of the environment, such as the naturalist Joaquín Araújo, who yesterday took part in the cine forum organized by the Pequeño Cine Estudio (Magallanes, 1), in which he spoke about ‘The thirst for water’ and who also participates in ‘Sofía will return’; Pedro Costa Morata, winner of the National Environmental Prize 1998, who will discuss the ‘Eco-policy of the Mar Menor’ today, after the screening; o Joaquín Nieto, Extraordinary National Environment and Climate Award 2022, whose participation is planned tomorrow, Tuesday, under the title ‘SOS Mar Menor’.

‘Sofía Will Return’ is a docu-fiction in which Lisón captures the dramatic moment experienced by the residents of Los Alcázares when the DANA storms of 2019 devastated the city and the ensuing citizen mobilization to fight against the degradation of the marine ecosystem and to reach ILP from the Mar Menor.

María Araque, an urban teenager, stars in the film as Sofía, the Mar Menor’s first environmental refugee, who is forced to travel to Canada with her fishing father after seeing her job prospects frustrated by the encroachment. of the environment in the lagoon. A realistic docufiction that ends in 2056 with a happy ending; an ending to which Lisón and Meseguer want to contribute with their ‘Cinema of urgency’. This is precisely the issue they will tackle today from a cinematic activism that has become a hallmark of their artistic production and an example of “how, through art, different sectors can be brought together to work for the desired changes,” says Conchi Meseguer.

Delighted with the reception and the echo of the film – it has found a place in the national prime time news programs – Conchi and Lisón emphasize the empathetic feeling that ‘Sofía will return’ awakens in viewers and seize the opportunity to reach out for help. questions at a time when there are 20 million climate refugees per year, according to UNHCR. “Our emergency cinema is becoming something beyond the screen; a project in which people with knowledge participate to rigorously expose the situation and find solutions,” says Meseguer. And he begs for “a patron to be able to program the film and the film forums across Spain and in schools to contribute to the changes that society and the environment need.”
