The Performing Arts Laboratory will empower young creators

Murcian directors Andrés Galián, José Antonio Villegas and Ana Barceló promote this project under the auspices of the Teatro Circo

Young artists have a new chance to shine thanks to the creation of the Murcia Region Performing Arts Laboratory. An initiative born from the heads of Andrés Galián, José Antonio Villegas and Ana Barceló, three directors with projection in the region, to “help and promote the young creation of Murcia”. The program offers a two-month training that will culminate in the premiere of a play at the Teatro Circo de Murcia, an institution that provides its financial and logistical support to the project.

The deadline to register and be one of the seven participants who will be part of the Artistic Creation Collective ends next Monday at 6:00 PM. The call is open to young people between the ages of 18 and 25 and the registration form is available on their Instagram profile (@lab_rm). “Anyone of any origin can apply, it is not limited to the region, although we understand that it is difficult to live in Murcia for two months [pagándose la estancia] from the outside,” explains Andrés Galián, one of the organizers.

In addition, you can participate regardless of the artistic discipline as the aim is to “create a theater company that is stable in the future” and where possible set designers, sound art, light etc.

When the registration period closes, the ‘staff’ will carry out their selection process, they will choose the first selected, they will interview and from there the finalists will be chosen for the casting. The workshop will take place from September 19 to November 25. The winners will receive guidance in the creation process through the coordination of the Laboratory, a training divided into three intensive workshops with three performing arts professionals of European prestige – Xavier Bobés, Iara Solano (‘Sleepwalk Collective’) and Pablo Gisbert (‘El Conde de Torrefiel’– , a technical residency at the Párraga Center, the opportunity to rehearse in the halls of the Romea Theater and to premiere his work at the Murcia Circo Theater on November 25.

The first goal, Galián recalls, is to set up a theater company, but that doesn’t mean that the goal can’t be something else for another year, such as strengthening the already existing companies and providing specialized training. “Every year we will rethink ourselves to improve working conditions, create a business fabric and provide opportunities for young people.” The Performing Arts Laboratory is conceived as a long-term project.
