“Grüss Gott” vs. “Guten Tag”: Oida, are you still okay?

Date:

Our politicians are surprising us again today with their lack of sensitivity. In the midst of war, inflation and the like, some people’s representatives insist on discussing the proper way to greet people. Perhaps the following form of address for politicians could also be included in the discussion: “Oida, are you okay?”

Because it is scandalous with how much dedication unnecessary mock debates are discussed. In the ÖVP U-committee, SPÖ party leader Kai Jan Krainer even went so far as to say that in Vienna they don’t say “Grüß Gott” but “Hello”. Anyone who thought it couldn’t be more bizarre is wrong: because the ÖVP was indignant about firing back and spoke of a “huge border crossing” in its own broadcast.

The Chancellor’s statement on the correct salutation is missing!
And it gets even weirder: Krainer again finds “sensitivity” in the ÖVP when she already feels attacked by a friendly “Hello”. He denies that the “incident” should have happened like this: “You shouldn’t believe everything the ÖVP says,” he writes on Twitter. We can wait for further reactions from politicians, perhaps Chancellor Karl Nehammer also wants to say something about this explosive case?

Stupidity is an Austrian phenomenon
You could understand it as an Austrian phenomenon that politicians in exciting times are silenced by such nonsense discussions. There is clearly a lack of sensitivity when the average Austrian does not survive the winter and the political discourse is alternated with hello-god rabble, expensive piano purchases or internal power games. Not to mention the endless chat leaks.

Can ÖVP and SPÖ ever work together again?
But sarcasm aside, as bizarre as this dispute is, it once again shows how hardened the fronts are between the two traditional parties. If even a “Grüß Gott” leads to mutual begging, how are the SPÖ and ÖVP ever going to be able to work together seriously again? Despite this ridiculousness, the mood between the two seems so bad that a black and red government is a long way off. And makes red-pink-green more and more likely.

What else could explode red-pink-green…
A coalition of three women Beate Meinl-Reisinger, Leonore Gewessler at the head of the Greens and Pamela Rendi-Wagner, if they are not replaced by Burgenland governor Hans Peter Doskozil at the next election, would at least be more realistic in terms of mood. What could break red-pink-green dreams: NEOS and green’s attitude to the correct greeting formula has not been passed on.
