With the Schengen spectacle involving Romania and Bulgaria, the Chancellor’s Party is once again presenting itself as a haven for tough guys. But Gerhard Karner, placed in the brightly lit arena by Karl Nehammer as Interior Minister, is not up to the task. Ultimately, Herbert Kickl wins.
Following this week’s summit meeting of EU heads of government, the outcome of Austria’s Schengen blockade can be predicted without any risk: at a special EU summit in February, shortly after the state elections in Lower Austria, a long-winded compromise for Romania’s accession and Bulgaria will be found. Then comes the hour of Herbert Kickl. He will heap mockery and contempt upon the chancellor’s company. On the subject of asylum populism, the FPÖ leader and former interior minister is simply the larger number. Rhetorically and substantively, Gerhard Karner will always lose to this opponent.
