A 35-year-old man has been convicted in a Belfast court of raping a 19-year-old woman on St Patrick’s Day.
Paul John Michael Burn, speaking in College Square in the north, appeared in Belfast Magistrates Court on Tuesday, where he was charged with two counts of rape and one count of sexual assault.
He was also accused on 17 March of stealing £150m in cash.
The court heard that the woman, who was drunk at the time, returned to her domicile around 4:00 pm and noticed the defendant standing near her home address.
The court was told he was “praised” and asked if he wanted to “continue”.
After the refusal, the court heard that the defendant followed the victim inside as soon as he opened the door.
The court was told that after the victim was lying on the sofa, the defendant sexually assaulted him.
The woman underwent a forensic examination after reporting the alleged rape charge to the police.
Paul John Michael Byrne spoke in court only to show that he understood the allegations against him.
Deny the allegations.
Police said the victim and defendant confirmed that they did not know each other until March 17.
The court was also informed that the accused avoided arrest for several days after learning on March 19 that the police were looking for him.
Police also spoke to the defendant by phone on March 20.
He surrendered to the police the next day.
The lawyer said the defendant wanted to take drugs on Monday if he was in custody.
The defendant was released on bail in court on Tuesday, with the judge expressing concern that the defendant had not previously contacted the police.
He has received legal assistance and will appear again in court on April 12.
