Austria is a country of armchair gluers. Looking back, it’s to HC Strache’s credit after the Ibiza debacle that he took his hat off quite quickly. As absurd as it sounds, one or two politicians can learn a big lesson from him!
The fact that the ÖVP does not feel guilty after Pilnacek’s leak borders on an achievement. Of course, that does not mean that the party should simply accept the accusations that are now being made: but a small ‘sorry’ would at least be appropriate given the fatal look of recent years…
Hats off, HC!
Given the current balancing act of explanation, even HC Strache must be positively highlighted. After his alcohol-soaked groin shame in Ibiza, he apologized without much fanfare and resigned. This was only necessary given the omnipotence fantasies à la Orban. And he rightly recognized that – at least for the first six months – and acted on it. Cheers, HC!
Austrian politicians – hard to leave
Because that is not a given. There has never been a real culture of resignation here in Austria. Our politicians are leaving quickly. As we know from the past, even investigations have not stopped one or two politicians from acting as representatives of the people. That you are resigning because you have violated the moral values of politics? There is no such case that can be remembered in recent times.
Tip: dive in!
If you want to interpret it positively for politicians, it doesn’t necessarily just have something to do with a lack of guilt. One of the reasons why many stay even when the situation is oppressive is the social exclusion and shame that results. Which private sector company still wants you after you’ve resigned? Better to just sit there and dive through…
Why people are so reluctant to leave politics
The financial component cannot be ignored either. For many, politics is a safe and incredibly lucrative source of income that requires no qualifications whatsoever. What other industry does this exist in?
