Sociologist and sex educator Barbara Rothmüller commenting on the debate on gender diversity.
Men and women, that much is clear, mark the cornerstones of the gender order. We think we know what distinguishes the two sexes. can park. wants to listen. To take decisions. be caring. But the clarity is not as clear as it used to be.
Anna cuts down trees with a chainsaw and claims to be as much a woman as her friend Verena, who sews her curtains herself. How masculine or feminine you feel is only partially related to biological sex or gender stereotypes. People can’t really feel comfortable in their own skin, neither as a man or as a woman. Some see themselves as female or male, but don’t have the body to be that gender. All this is by no means new. The only thing that’s new is how much it’s talked and debated.
Whatever you think about it, you should know that research has shown that people who deviate from the strict male-female order are among the most marginalized groups in Austria. You shouldn’t make yourself important at their expense.
